Lead Paint Victim Obtains Subsidized Housing

A single mother from Honduras with three young children, the elder with severe autism, the second with an elevated blood lead level of 18, shared a single room in a Chelsea apartment. The landlord refused to make repairs and to delead the unit until we threatened to sue and brought pressure from the Attorney General’s Office. Because the presence of lead paint is considered a significant threat to the life or safety of a household member, this family was able to obtain a three-bedroom unit of public housing on an emergency priority basis.
