Victory for Sanctuary Cities

As the Federal Court for the Northern District of California recognized, sanctuary policies reflect the local judgment that communities are more safe when local police are not entangled in federal immigration enforcement. Through its sanctuary cities Executive Order, the Trump Administration has threatened to destabilize and harm these communities by stripping them of all federal funding. That’s why the federal court issued emergency relief in the form of a nation-wide injunction that prevents the federal government from bullying and sabotaging sanctuary communities.

At the Lawyers’ Committee, we were the first civil rights organization in the country to sue the Trump Administration on behalf of sanctuary communities. In Massachusetts, we represent the cities of Chelsea and Lawrence in a federal lawsuit designed to stop this federal overreach that tramples on local autonomy, harms immigrant families and children, and makes our communities less safe.

As the Lawyers’ Committee has consistently done, we will continue to turn to the courts to enforce the civil rights protections that strengthen our diverse communities.

The Boston Globe, the New York Times, Bay State Banner, Metro, Eagle-Tribune, and the Boston Herald featured our contributions to this sanctuary cities victory.
